As we find ourselves at the threshold of Imbolc, it’s a perfect moment to celebrate the subtle signs of spring and the promise of renewed light. In our busy lives, it’s essential to carve out time for small, meaningful rituals that connect us to the natural rhythms of the earth. This year in particular, Imbolc falls on a busy stretch of my Spring semester (my last semester, yay!) so a larger ritual or gathering isn’t possible for me. But that doesn’t mean that a smaller, solitary moment to acknowledge the holiday and turn of the wheel is any less meaningful.
Simple Imbolc Rituals for Busy Lives
- Light a candle to honor the returning light. As you do, visualize the warmth and brightness filling your space, symbolizing the increasing strength of the sun.
- Take a moment to plant a seed, either in your garden or a potted plant. As you nurture this seed, reflect on your aspirations for growth and renewal.
- If time and weather allow, go on a brief nature walk. Notice the first signs of spring, like the new buds on trees or the early shoots pushing through the soil. Feel the earth awakening beneath your feet.
- Do a mindful decluttering of your living space. It doesn’t have to be a huge undertaking for the whole house all at once – just a few minutes here and there will add up and make a big difference. As you clean and organize, visualize releasing stagnant energy and making room for fresh, vibrant energies to flow through your home.
Plant-Based Golden Milk Recipe
To me, Imbolc is about acknowledging the warmth of the emerging light and it serves as reminder that spring, and abundance, is on the way. Historically, Imbolc has meaning for both pagans and Christians, as well as cultural meaning that you can read about here. One way that you can perform a simple ritual yourself to feel the warmth of the coming season is to make a comforting cup of golden milk. Here is a plant-based recipe you can try, but it is a bit flexible, and the ingredients and quantities can be adjusted to suit your tastes. I added in whole star anise from Frontier Co-op for a fragrant garnish, and their cinnamon sticks work well for this purpose too but I didn’t have any on hand today. 🙂
I love this turmeric blend from Frontier Co-op and keep it on hand to make this golden milk recipe even easier with a delicious, warm spice. It has the cinnamon, ginger, pepper, and cardamom already blended into the turmeric for you in perfect proportions.
Golden Milk Recipe
Ingredients
- 2 cups almond milk or any other plant-based milk
- 1 teaspoon turmeric powder
- 1/2 teaspoon cinnamon
- 1/4 teaspoon ginger freshly grated or ground
- pinch black pepper
- 1-2 teaspoons maple syrup, agave syrup, or honey
- dash nutmeg and/or cardamom to taste
Instructions
- Gently heat the almond milk in a saucepan over medium-low heat.
- Add turmeric, cinnamon, ginger, and black pepper. Whisk well to combine the spices.
- Simmer for about 5 minutes, stirring occasionally. Avoid boiling.
- Remove from heat and sweeten with maple syrup, agave syrup, or honey to your liking.
- Strain the golden milk if desired, and pour it into your favorite mug.
- Sprinkle a dash of nutmeg or cardamom on top for an extra layer of flavor.
As you sip your golden milk, enjoy the warmth and hopefully it reminds you of the gradual return of light and life. Light a candle in a color for the holiday, such as pink, white, silver, lavender, or another color that has meaning to you and what you’d like to focus on in this season. This may be a good time to take a few minutes to journal the growth that you look forward to in the changing of the seasons. Maybe there are seeds planted that are not tangible, but are instead new aspirations, projects, or a quest to deepen your creativity, spirituality, or other skills. Embrace the energy of renewal and growth, both in the physical and metaphysical planes.
I hope this simple ritual brings you comfort and connection during Imbolc!
