My son happens to be a huge fan of KP during Boy Scout camping trips – otherwise known as kitchen patrol, which is not typically a favorite duty among scouts! From cooking to cleaning, Cian really enjoys KP so when I came across The New Camp Cookbook by Linda Ly at our local library (we did end up purchasing the book too, for the sake of reference and taking it on scout trips and not running the risk of marring a library copy!), I thought it could serve as inspiration for his patrol’s meal plans for upcoming camping trips. Cian is interested in leveling up his camp meals and this book did not disappoint!
Ly’s recipes and Will Taylor’s photographs pair perfectly in this beautiful cookbook written for the both the foodie and the outdoors enthusiast alike. With recipes like Grilled Coleslaw with Creamy Gorgonzola Vinaigrette, these definitely aren’t your typical camping meals – no hot dogs on sticks here – and are sure to impress your camping (or fishing or hunting) buddies. Our favorites include the Grape and Gorgonzola Grilled Pizza and if you’ve spent any time reading posts here, you’ll know that we make grilled pizzas quite often and even this recipe gave us new ideas for an old favorite. Other stand outs include Sweet Caramelized Figs and Peaches, Cider Braised Pork Shoulder with Apple and Polenta, and Blueberry Skillet Scones with Lemon Glaze for breakfast. Recipes are separated into sections for breakfasts, midday meals, dinners, desserts, and drinks.
In addition to recipes, Ly is careful to include food safety information and other tips, like keeping your meals safe from bears! She also covers how to use a dutch oven, cooking in foil packs, essential gear, and how to safely build an efficient fire or getting your grill started.
The recipes in The New Camp Cookbook are definitely best suited for car camping or camping at a stationary camp site, as opposed to hiking and backpacking due to the tools and ingredients needed – it just isn’t practical for covering long distances. And of course, you can certainly fire up the grill or fire pit in your back yard and create an amazing meal at home!
